  • Do not enter our Home if you have symptoms of a contagious illness. (Cold/Flu/COVID-19, etc.)

How Infectious Diseases Spread

Infectious diseases most commonly spread from an infected person (either symptomatic or asymptomatic) to another person through the following.

  • Close contact: Breathing in someone’s respiratory droplets after they cough, sneeze, laugh or sing.
  • Contaminated surfaces: Touching something with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Common greetings: Handshakes, hugs or kisses.

Common Types of Illnesses

  • Respiratory- characterized by symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny nose, and congestion.
  • Gastro- characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Do not visit the home if sick. For respiratory symptoms wait 24 hours from last symptom or since it has been 5 days and you no longer have a fever (whichever is sooner)

For Gastro symptoms wait 48 hours from last episode to visit the home.

Remember, what may be a minor illness for you could have severe negative outcomes for our residents.

How to protect others

To protect your loved one, other residents in the home, and Shalom’s staff please sanitize your hands frequently throughout your visit for at least 20 seconds at a time. Also ensure to wear the required PPE if visiting a resident in isolation as posted on the door. Additionally, if you are visiting someone who is sick, limit your visit to just that one person to prevent the outbreak from spreading in the home.

During an outbreak masks will be recommended, here are the do’s and don’ts of mask wearing

DO DON’T
Wash your hands or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer before and after touching the mask or face covering. Touch the mask while wearing it
Use the ear loops or ties to put on and remove the mask. Remove the mask to talk to someone or pull it down below your nose
Ensure your nose and mouth are fully covered. Hang the mask from your neck or ears

If you are visiting a resident who is in isolation with airborne precautions (typically used if COVID-19 is suspected), an N95 mask will be required. If you are fit tested elsewhere, please speak to our infection control lead at extension 1131, we will see if we can provide the size, you are fit tested for. You can also speak to the IPAC lead about opportunities for mask fit testing. If you are not fit tested and do not wish to be, the 1870+ mask is considered a Universal size that fits most, but not all, individuals. Please note that without the proper fitting mask there is a higher risk of you contracting an airborne illness.
